Abstract: Right to free speech is practical and fundamental to human life and co-existence, and it is necessary and important in achieving environmental protection. This paper analyzes the relationship between freedom of speech and environmental protection, highlighting the ways in which the former enables the latter. It is argued that freedom of speech allows individuals to raise awareness about environmental problems, for instance, degradation, hold governments and corporations accountable for environmental harm, and promote maintainable or sustainable development. The theoretical framework of freedom of speech and environmental protection is considered in line with globally acceptable human rights principles and jurisprudence. The research adopted the doctrinal methodology, following which primary and secondary sources of law were used, including: statutes, case laws and international treaties, as well as published books, journal articles and internet materials. It is our view that effective unhindered practice of free speech is vital to promote and achieve the protection of the natural environment. Consequently, the governments and other actors must protect and promote freedom of speech, so that the protection of the environment can be achieved, among other benefits.
