Abstract: Guru Ram Rai Darbar Sahib, also known as Jhanda Darbar, is a historic Gurudwara located in Dehradun, renowned for its exquisite Kangra paintings, which are nearly 400 years old. These paintings intricately depict mythological stories and natural landscapes with fine and delicate lines, brought to life through soft and enchanting color combinations. The colors used in these paintings are derived from natural sources, including minerals, plants, and other organic materials. The preparation of the painting surface involves a meticulous process where the paper is coated with a white substance and then polished with a conch shell to achieve smoothness. The cultural significance of these paintings at Jhanda Darbar is immense, as they not only showcase the excellence of Kangra art but also vividly bring to life Indian mythology and natural beauty. This study concludes that the presence of Kangra paintings in Jhanda Darbar is evidence of the art form’s ability to extend beyond Himachal Pradesh and leave an indelible mark on various religious and cultural sites. There is a pressing need to preserve and promote this invaluable heritage so that future generations can become familiar with this rich artistic tradition.
