Challenges in the Implementation of the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP)

Abstract: The Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) aims to enhance teacher preparation by integrating subject knowledge with pedagogical training. However, its implementation presents several challenges across institutional, pedagogical, infrastructural, and policy levels. This paper explores the critical obstacles in the execution of ITEP and suggests possible solutions for its effective integration into the education system. The program’s journey through experimental initiatives in the 1980s and 1990s culminated in the 21st century, where ITEP emerged as a transformative force in teacher education. Theoretical foundations of ITEP draw from constructivist and socio-cultural theories, emphasizing active student engagement and the collaborative construction of knowledge. Pedagogically, ITEP employs innovative approaches such as project-based learning, case studies, and collaborative projects, fosteringcritical thinking and adaptability. Success stories from institutions pioneering ITEP highlight its positive impacts on both educators and students. Graduates demonstrate a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary connections, translating in to more engaging and relevant learning experiences. Research indicates that ITEP graduates’exhibit heightened adaptability and collaboration skills, influencing positive changes in school cultures.

Teachers are the architects of a nation, influencing and motivating students through their intellect, ideals, experience, wisdom, and dynamic personality. To create dedicated and dutiful teachers, a nation must provide various teacher education programs to ensure a diverse and effective education system. The National Education Policy2020 in India introduced a revolutionary 4-year integrated teacher education program. In this paper attempt has been made to explore the opportunities and challenges of major Integrated Teacher Education Programme initiatives.
